MANASSAS, Va. -- A plane that took off from Manassas Regional Airport late Thursday morning crashed into a home in Louisa County, killing the pilot.
The 1981 Cessna fixed wing, multi-engine plane took off from Manassas at 11:47 a.m., and later landed at Freeman Field in Louisa County to refuel.
After refueling, the plane took off again bound for Danville. But minutes into the flight the plane crashed into a home about a quarter of a mile from the airport on U.S. 522, about 12:34 p.m. The crash scene is about two hours from Manassas.
Both the plane and the house were immediately engulfed in flames, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
When police arrived, the tail was the only part of the plane still visible as it was protruding the front of the house, said Geller.
The homeowner, who was inside the basement at the time of the crash, was able to escape without injury.
The pilot’s body was taken to the state’s medical examiner’s office but has not yet been identified.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
