A Woodbridge woman was charged today with embezzling about $279,000 from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, a spokesman from the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Susan Thanh Litwin, 37, has worked as a finance technician at the magnet school since January 2007 and was responsible for recieving and depositing money used to support student athletics, classes, clubs and activities, federal prosecutors said

In a criminal complaint on file at U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Litwin is accused of stealing the money by writing checks to herself and by withdrawing funds from TJHS bank accounts and depositing into her own bank accounts, taking between $2,500 and $30,000 at a time.

The court documents allege Litwin stole $279,313 between March 2008 and January 2010.

In an interview with authorities on March 2, Litwin admitted to stealing at least $150,000, according to the court documents.

Litwin told police that she stole the money to support her habit of gambing Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos and to pay off her credit card debt and home mortgage payments, according to court documents.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about this case or similar cases to call the FBI’s Northern Virginia Public Corruption and Government Fraud Tip Line at 703-686-6225 or e-mail nova.corruption@ic.fbi.gov.

Litwin is due to appear at U.S. District Court in Alexandria this afternoon.
