LETTER: On don't ask, don't tell

»  Comments | Post a Comment

As a veteran of World War II, I want to respond to articles appearing in the newspaper relating to military policy.

At a time when liberal thoughts and actions are running rampart, I think it is time to confront the issue with some common sense and factual foresight. It is human nature to choose our friends -- when that choice is denied us we seek help from another source. In this case that help has to come from Congress and our defense department.

Before proceeding, I want to advise the reader that what you read is the opinion of one person. That one person is trying to convince others that his opinion is right. I also have to wonder if those who are trying to change the policy were ever in the service.

The writer related to the fear that a homosexual may attempt to hit on a non-homosexual person. I know that this is a realistic fear, as I had to deal with it in my company during World War II. I repeat, it can and does happen! We need to be realistic in this regard. Why should we change that which is working? Change does not always denote progress -- it can be an abstract.

I do not have a problem with gays being in the service, nor do I question their honesty and loyalty -- but I do have a problem with their sexual orientation.

Yes, we let them out of the closet, nor do I feel we need to put them back into the closet. But from a humanistic and logical perspective, we need to accept the fact that they are different, and we should not let them try to convince us they are not.

I fulfilled my military obligation during World War II with love, dignity and loyalty. About 415,000 of my comrades made the ultimate sacrifice.

Those in the military today might have to serve with a homosexual, or lesbian, but they need not know their sexual orientation.

Being in the military is an awesome responsibility, we need not and should not add another kind of fear to the situation.
