Haymarket, Va. -- A group of volunteers at Mountain View Elementary School in Haymarket hopes to turn the school green.
And they're looking for help from the community to do it.
Mountain View's Parent Teacher Organization's Landscape Committee has started a project called "Greening MVES."
The goal is to raise money to expand an outdoor classroom at the school.
"Greening MVES is all about hands-on learning," committee members said in an announcement about the new program. "Teachers will have an outdoor lab that may be used in learning the scientific method, gathering information, formulating hypotheses, making predictions, measuring, sorting, classifying and communicating information about the natural world."
In the outdoor classroom, students will be able to observe plant growth, take nature walks and learn about different types and parts of trees, among other things, committee members said.
The committee plans to plant trees and create seating areas outside to create the outdoor classroom.
They also plan to paint cougar paws on the sidewalk and install bright blue benches to add "a splash of color" to the outside of the school.
To help fund the project, local businesses can buy bricks that will be placed in a path at the outdoor classroom.
The bricks cost $100 and will include the business' name and a cougar paw.
Businesses that purchase a brick will also be listed on the PTO Web site and in business partnership pamphlets sent home with students.
The PTO is also selling student bricks for $50. Those bricks, just for Mountain View students, will include the student's name and a saying of their choice.
For more information or to order a brick, visit the Mountain View PTO Web site at www.mountainviewpto.org.
The PTO will officially launch the "Greening MVES" project at an Earth Day celebration on April 22.
