MANASSAS, Va. -- A Dale City man serving a sentence for robbery is now charged with assaulting another inmate at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail.
That 33-year-old prisoner, who was not identified by police, suffered severe facial and head injuries in the Friday fight. He was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
On Tuesday, detectives obtained a warrant charging 21-year-old Brandon Stevens with aggravated malicious wounding, said Prince William County police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez.
Police said a corrections officer doing security checks was alerted to the fight about 4:40 p.m. Friday. The guard found the victim a few minutes later.
Hernandez did not say where in the jail the fight happened or what the inmates were fighting about.
Stevens was jailed in September 2008 on a robbery charge and pleaded guilty last July. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison with eight years suspended.
If convicted in connection with Friday’s assault, Stevens faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
He is scheduled to appear in court April 21.
