Park Authority releases three possible plans for Silver Lake

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It's time for Silver Lake to have a plan.

The Prince William County Park Authority opened the park, off Antioch Road near Haymarket, in October for hiking, biking, horseback riding, picnicking and fishing.

Since then, park authority officials have been gathering ideas about what other activities should be allowed at the 232-acre park.

The park authority will hold a public hearing March 24 on three possible master plans for Silver Lake.

Maps depicting each of the plans can be found on the park authority Web site, http://www.pwcparks.org/Portals/0/ParkDevelopments/conceptplans/SilverLakeMP2010.pdf.

All three plans include an activity building, restrooms, a picnic area, designated parking for equestrian trailers and at least one fishing pier, which is already in place at the park.

In Plan B, the park will also have a second fishing pier, on the opposite side of the 25-acre lake, a picnic pavilion and a primitive camping area.

Plan C has all that and adds another overflow parking lot, non-motorized boating, an outdoor classroom, equestrian camping, a playground and a community garden area. That plan also adds a floating pier in a 9-acre quarry at the park.

The park authority held two community meetings in the fall to get public input on the park. At the meetings, people asked for things such as scuba diving, disc golf, camping, bird watching, archery, skeet shooting, swimming, bass fishing and a dog park. Others asked the park authority leave the park as it is now.

The public hearing on the proposed master plans will be held March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the park authority administration building, in George Hellwig Memorial Park, 14420 Bristow Road, Manassas.

The Park Authority is tentatively scheduled to adopt a Silver Lake master plan April 14.
