DUMFRIES, Va. -- A man who was practicing how to clean his shotgun when it went off and injured his neighbor is charged with reckless handling of a firearm.

Police say Anthony Michael Randall,48, 17646 Hampstead Ridge Court in Dumfries, lives next door to the 42-year-old victim.

The woman was injured by a buckshot pellet when a shotgun went off and punctured two walls of her home about noon Thursday.

The shotgun went off in a bedroom of Randall's home and penetrated a wall. The buckshot flew across a narrow yard and entered the woman's home.

She was flown to a local hospital and kept overnight where it was determined she was hit with a buckshot, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

After firing the weapon, police said Randall immediately went to check on his neighbor. When he found her injured, he called 911.

Three adults were inside the victim's home at the time of the shooting, including the victim's sister and parents. They were not injured, Perok said.
