Dumfries, Va. - A new ZIPS dry cleaners has opened near Dumfries, opening up 17 new jobs.
A U.S. Marshal for 20 years before retiring, owner Jim Ogan wanted to open his business.
"I researched some 20 different franchises before deciding to open a ZIPS," said Ogan.
The store, at 3930 Fettler Park Drive, opened Jan. 18.
"Despite the snowy weather, we have been doing a good business," said Ogan.
This is the 21st ZIPS store to open in the Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland area.
Ogan said he became
familiar with the chain when using a facility located in Annapolis, noting that he was impressed with the business.
"Customers who use the stores are very loyal. They like our service and our prices. Garments dropped off before 9 a.m. will be ready at 5 p.m. the very same day at no extra cost. Our pricing is very simple," he said.
Ogan said he saw the need for the firm to come into the area since the closest operations were in Manassas and Fredericksburg.
"We are drawing both military and civilian customers from throughout the Montclair, Dumfries, Quantico and Woodbridge area," he said.
Store hours are Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Ogan wants to be community-minded and is offering free dry cleaning, up to three garments a week, for those who are unemployed and going on job interviews.
"With the economy and job market the way it is, I want to help anyone unemployed any way that I can," he said.
Ogan said in his free time he enjoys sailing and going to the beach with his family in the summertime.
For now, however, he spends many hours in the shop taking care of his customers.
