PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- A 25-year-old Woodbridge man who crashed his car on Prince William Parkway early Monday and declined a ride from a police officer was later killed trying to cross the road.
Adam D. Mataseria, of 4886 Montego Drive in Woodbridge, was struck by two vehicles about 5:45 a.m. east of Hoadly Road while crossing the four-lane road after leaving a convenience store, said Prince William police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez. It was dark and raining at the time, police said.
The first car to hit Mataseria was a 2010 Ford Focus, driven by a 27-year-old Alexandria woman. The second vehicle, a 1993 Mazda Navajo SUV, was driven by a 50-year-old Manassas man.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one has been charged.
About 40 minutes earlier, Mataseria crashed his 2001 Ford Crown Victoria on the parkway near Hoadly Road as he traveled in the westbound lanes. His car was towed and the police officer who investigated offered Mataseria a ride, but he declined, Hernandez said.
The incident snarled traffic on the parkway for hours.
Many motorists told the News & Messenger they were disturbed to see the man’s body lying on the side the road with only a small sheet covering the body.
A school bus driver said several children on her bus saw the body as the bus passed.
“Due to the sheet issue, and no police car blocking the view they texted parents and took pictures,” said Marcy Carroll.
The road was reopened at 9:30 a.m.
