PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- Prince William supervisors today resume fiscal 2011 budget talks in full force, and have scheduled work sessions for 16 different departments beginning at 2 p.m. and continuing into the evening 7:30 session.
Supervisors took a week off from discussing the fiscal 2011 proposal at last week’s meeting to deal with other government matters.
On the list of departments to undergo review: Finance, the county attorney’s office, the library system, public works, transportation, the Park Authority and the Office of Information Technology and Development Services. The discussions are set to follow a proclamation of March 30 as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” – a joint venture of the county government and the county chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Association -- and are tentatively timed to span 20 minutes each.
The library, which received a new library catalog and checkout system, will be presenting some interesting statistics that show circulation of materials is on the upswing, despite the growing popularity and accessibility of the Internet.
“Circulation of materials is up 7 percent over fiscal 2009, requests for reserves on materials is up 33 percent and library visits since July has equaled 1.1 million,” according to background documents to the board.
To deal with budget cuts in the face of rising service demands, the Library Board approved two new fees – a quarter per book hold, and $3 per Inter Library Loan request. Libraries are also looking at several other cost-cutting measures, including reduced hours of operation, limited events and programs, fewer magazine subscriptions and books at neighborhood libraries, and reductions in staff.
At the night meeting at the McCoart Administration Building, supervisors will hold work sessions on community services, the cooperative extension, social services and public health. According to the agenda, the 7:30 p.m. session is supposed to end about 8:50 p.m.
