Prince William County, Va.--A telework bill submitted by Reps. Gerald E. "Gerry" Connolly and Frank R. Wolf and a handful of other congressmen has passed a key House subcommittee.
The Telework Improvements Act would require federal agencies to expand their teleworking programs, to set benchmarks to monitor their progress and to establish a target of 20 percent of the eligible federal workforce teleworking an average of one day per week, according to Connolly's office.
It passed the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on the Federal Workforce. It now heads for discussion by the full committee.
Connolly, a Democrat who represents most of Prince William County, and Wolf, a Republican who represents Manassas, Manassas Park and part of western Prince William, were original sponsors of the bill.
Rep. Robert J. Wittman, a Republican who represents part of southern Prince William, also co-sponsored the legislation.
An amendment by Connolly to make teleworking a central element of federal agencies' emergency plans was also approved by the subcommittee.
The legislation would "ensure that federal employees can use telework to keep the federal government operational during severe weather or, God forbid, a terrorist attack or other incident," Connolly said in a prepared statement.
"The safety of our region depends upon the federal government's ability to function even if the region's transportation network is paralyzed. We have to be prepared."
Local gubernatorial appointments
Two local residents will join Sean T. Connaughton in the secretary of transportation's office, Gov. Robert F. "Bob" McDonnell's office announced last week.
Connaughton, former chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, was named secretary of transportation in December.
David Tyeryar of Prince William will serve as deputy secretary and chief financial officer of transportation.
Tyeryar served as budget director for Prince William County for more than eight years and previously served as the county's accounting division chief for 10 years.
Jennifer Green of Woodbridge will serve as special assistant to Connaughton.
She previously worked for the Department of Leadership and American Studies at Christopher Newport University in Newport News.
Jenkins honored
The Manassas & Manassas Park Democrats on Saturday gave Prince William County Supervisor John Jenkins the Blue Victory Award for service to the Prince William area and to Virginia.
Jenkins, the senior member of the Board of County Supervisors, has served as Neabsco District supervisor since October 1982.
The local committee also heard from Organizing for America Virginia State Director Brandyn Keating, Del. Lionel Spruill Sr. of Chesapeake and the candidates for the Democratic nomination for the 10th congressional district.
