Police say a Marine found dead Sunday near a railroad crossing on the Quantico Marine Corps base was hit by a train.

Detectives are investigating the case as a suicide.

Lance Cpl. Lucas Gary Lowe, 20, was found dead near a railroad track at 12:45 a.m., near Henderson Road on the base, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

An autopsy showed he was killed by a train, police said.

Lowe was a combat correspondent for the Quantico Sentry, the newspaper of record for the base.

Lowe, who was from North Carolina, had been stationed at the base since late 2008, officials said.

The investigation into his death is ongoing.
