SERVE Inc., Manassas, recently received a shipment of much needed food items for its food bank.
U. S. Foodservice's Manassas division donated about 3,700 pounds of food to the nonprofit.
The items included crackers, dried cranberries, salad dressing, salt, cocoa and garlic seasoning.
To date, the firm has donated more than 14,000 pounds of food to SERVE this year. In 2009, the total was 159,000. The company also donates to Transitional Housing BARN.
" We really appreciate all of the donations from U. S. Foodservice who are our biggest food con-tributors. Many of their employees also volunteer to help to ensure that we have enough food to assist our needy families," said Mary Jo Dick, emergency assistance program manager.
U. S. Food Service is one of the country's premier foodservice's distributors, offering more than 43,000 national, private label and signature brand items and an array of services to it more than 250,000 customers. The company employs 26,000 associates in more than 60 locations nationwide, provid-ing food and related products to neighborhood restaurants, hospitals, schools, colleges and universities, hotels, government entities and other eating establishments.
"It is important for us to give back to the communities we serve," said Dede Rutherford, vice president of human resources, U.S. Foodservice-Manassas. "Our organization recognizes this need and has donated food to support local food pantries. We hope our increased support can make life a little easier for the many hungry families served by these food bank operations in the Manassas area."
