PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent Steven L. Walts recently announced more good news in regards to layoffs for the upcoming school year.
Originally scheduled to eliminate more than 700 positions during 2010-11 budget discussions, Walts and his staff have whittled that number down to 68 thanks to additional state and county funding and relocations, resignations and retirements, stated schools spokesman Keith Imon in an e-mail Tuesday.
No teachers should lose their jobs, in part because of the expected increase in enrollment this fall. The school division will be receiving 1,000 more new students than expected this fall due, in part, to the filling of many of the thousands of homes that went into foreclosure in 2008.
Because of budget cuts in recent years, the county has actually reduced staff by more than 400 positions, stated Imon. This was done by not filling open positions, eliminating others and not posting for jobs that our student growth would have normally initiated.
This week's numbers are not final and Walts is still working to shrink the number of layoffs through newly announced retirements and resignations, stated Imon.
