The Northern Virginia American Diabetes Association Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes will be conducted on Saturday.
The walk registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 10 a.m. at Pfitzner Stadium, Woodbridge,(home of the Potomac Nationals), in the county complex, off the Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge.
The event is expected to draw 1,000 participants and the goal is to raise $125,000.
There will also be a Health Fest, kid zone, music, Red Strider Zone for diabetic walkers and morning snacks before the walk.
Also planned is an energetic warm up and inspiring program about fighting diabetes. Walkers may select to take a two or four mile route.
At the Health Fest, local vendors and companies will be on hand to help promote a healthy lifestyle in all areas such as physical, mental or financial wellness.
Featured sponsors are Mary Washington Hospital, Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, Micron Technology and Lockheed Martin.
The Red Strider Zone is an area focused on celebrating people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, complete with Subway sandwiches and free massages.
The Kids Zone will feature a bounce house, face painting and activities for children of all ages.
There is also an Elite Feet Club, an area designated to thank and pamper the top fundraisers with lunch and free massages. Anyone who raised at least $500 is automatically a member.
The inspirational program will be highlighted by people who are dedicated to the mission of Stop Diabetes.
They include;
• Stacey Capers: Biggest Loser Season 6 contestant and founder of I Can Do Fitness.
• Jacob Rader: Nine-year-old Youth Ambassador living with type 1 diabetes for two years.
• Andrew Hume: Five-year-old Youth Ambassador living with type 1 diabetes since 2009
• Shamequa Obee: 18-year-old Youth Ambassador living with type 1 diabetes since age 12.
This is a new site for the walk.
