PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. - The most recent problems processing license applications at the Department of Motor Vehicles will be a thing of the past Thursday, according to an agency spokesperson.
“The [DMV] will be fully operational … [and will] have all hands on deck when computer service is fully restored [today], enabling the processing of driver’s licenses and ID cards in customer service centers,” said Melanie Stokes, a DMV official in a written statement.
The agency has not been able to process license and identification card renewals and applications since Aug. 25, when the computer system failed. The DMV estimates the week-long disruption affected between 35,000 and 45,000 customers.
The DMV is extending its hours of operations in order to compensate for the past week’s service delays. The agency will remain open at all its 74 locations in the state until 6 p.m. on Sept. 2, and Sept. 3. During the holiday weekend, DMV’s Saturday hours will run longer, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., for 14 of its locations – including Woodbridge, Leesburg and Alexandria.
Stokes does caution that “customers will experience longer waits in service due to the increased demand caused by the week-long outage,” and recommends that those who have business other than license renewals – the priority for this weekend – conduct it online, via www.dmvNOW.com.
