MANASSAS PARK, Va. - A former mechanic for Manassas Park pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of petit larceny for stealing from the city.
Troy Randolph Payne, 35, of Nokesville, was originally charged with two felonies, embezzlement and forgery.
Prosecutors Wednesday amended the embezzlement charge to the misdemeanor and dropped the forgery charge.
Prosecutors said Payne stole tires purchased with city funds for city vehicles and installed them on two of his own vehicles.
Payne was the city’s chief mechanic until authorities discovered the theft in March, police said at the time.
Payne was sentenced to 30 days in jail, with all jail time suspended on the condition of his good behavior for a year.
He was also ordered to pay court costs and to pay $1,771.08 in restitution to Manassas Park.
During his more than five years working for Manassas Park, Payne oversaw the maintenance of government vehicles, police vehicles, fire trucks and rescue squads and snow plows, city officials said at the time.
