WOODBRIDGE, Va. -- The winds are expected to pick up today, bringing with them an increased risk of fires.
The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning until 7 p.m.
A cold front is moving into the region and winds are expected to increase 15 to 25 mph. That, coupled with a decrease in humidity, will create favorable conditions that will allow fires to spread fast, according to the weather service.
Last year in the U.S., more than 78,000 wildland fires charred 5.9 million acres of land, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
During the past 10 years, 2003 saw the lowest number of wildland fires with 63,629 reported, with 4 million acres of land burned.
