A group of wounded warriors from Fort Belvoir and Walter Reed Army Medical Center put thoughts of the hospital and doctor’s visits behind them for a few hours recently as they set sail on the Patuxent River.
The Northern Virginia Sail and Power Squadron organized the event, along with the Patuxent and Rockville Power Squadrons. In all, 11 captains and their boats, eight of which were powered and three of which were sail, spent the day on the water with 42 wounded warriors and their families. A local group of Sea Scouts also had a boat in the water.
“This is something they’ve done for two years,” said Miles Friedman, president of the Quantico/Belvoir Regional Business Alliance and volunteer for the sail.
The day was sunny and hot and the group was on the water for about five hours.
“We just all cruised the Patuxent River,” said Friedman. “It felt so good to do this. For all of us, the good feeling of seeing the smiles on their faces. The wounded warriors are special priority of ours.”
The group enjoyed boxed lunches while on the boats and a picnic when they returned to dry land.
The Northern Virginia Sail and Power Squadron holds monthly meetings, safe boating courses, social events, boating activities and community service projects. For more information, visit them at their web site, nvsps.org.
