The death of Brentsville District High School senior Austin Trenum has been ruled a suicide, Prince William County police 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn said Tuesday.
Chinn said his parents discovered him Sunday and he died at Inova Fairfax Hospital early Monday. The cause of his death was hanging, Chinn said.
Austin was a senior running back and linebacker on Brentsville District High School’s football team.
He also played lacrosse for the school.
In a statement, school officials said they were saddened by the loss of Austin, son of School Board member Gil Trenum and his wife, Michelle.
“The school community is rallying to their support,” the statement said. “We ask that you join us in keeping the Trenum family in your thoughts.”
Grief counselors will be available for students and staff at the school this week.
On a Facebook page created in Austin’s memory, over 400 area students said they will wear orange and black -- Brentsville’s school colors -- in his memory Friday.
In a statement released Monday, the Trenum family remembered Austin as “a wonderful son, brother and grandson.”
“He was very deeply loved by his family, and highly respected by his teammates, friends and classmates,” the family said in the statement. “We want to thank our family, friends and the community for their support and prayers, during this very difficult time.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
