After a second teen with ties to Brentsville District High School apparently committed suicide Thursday, school officials are taking steps to educate parents about depression.
Travis Love, 18, a former Brentsville District High School student, died early Thursday, said Prince William County police 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn. She did not release how or where he died.
In a letter sent to parents Thursday, Brentsville principal Robert Scott said Love was currently “assigned to high school in an alternative setting.”
Love’s death follows the suicide of Brentsville senior Austin Trenum, who hanged himself Sunday in his home. Austin is the son of Prince William County School Board member Gil Trenum.
Police and school officials said the deaths don’t appear to be related and that the two didn’t appear to know each other.
“I regret to inform you that the Brentsville community has been struck by another tragedy this week,” Brentsville principal Robert Scott said in a letter sent to parents Thursday.
Grief counselors will be available at the school today and next week, he said.
“Clearly, these events have had a significant impact on students and teachers,” Scott said.
“Parents, please talk with your students, encouraging them to reach out to you, to a teacher, a coach, or a guidance counselor should they experience feelings of depression in the coming weeks.”
Scott said information about suicide and depression is available in the school’s counseling office. Information about helping teen’s deal with tragedy was also posted on the school’s website Thursday.
