A picture of a smiling teenage girl holding a white dog and the words “Kendra Tucker, We Love You” appeared on dozens of Battlefield High School students’ Facebook pages Wednesday, as the teens mourned the loss of a classmate.
Kendra Kaeleen Tucker, 15, of Gainesville, was pronounced dead at the scene of a car crash on Logmill Road in the Haymarket area, just after midnight Wednesday, Prince William County police said.
Four others—the 18-year-old driver, a 17-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl were all flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital.
The 17-year-old Gainesville boy was released from the hospital Wednesday, the 18-year-old Gainesville man was in stable condition, the 14-year-old girl Gainesville girl was in critical condition, but was expected to survive, and the 15-year-old girl was in very critical, life-threatening condition Wednesday afternoon, Prince William County police spokesman Jonathan Perok.
Police said the 18-year-old man was driving a 2005 Dodge Magnum west on Logmill Road, near James Madison Highway, at 12:02 a.m. when he struck a deer, swerved out of control and hit a tree.
No one in the car wore a seatbelt and speed was a factor in the crash, Perok said.
All of those involved are students at Battlefield High School.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students,” Prince William County schools spokesman Ken Blackstone said.
Area schools are closed this week for spring break, but grief counselors will be available at Battlefield High School Thursday from noon to 2 p.m., Blackstone said. The grief counselors will also be available Monday, when schools reopen after spring break.
Some friends of the teens plan to observe a day of silence Monday, in honor of Tucker, who was a freshman at Battlefield.
In Facebook tributes, her classmates recalled Tucker as a good friend, who was always there for others, and who they will never forget. They also for prayers for the four others injured in the crash.
There is a curfew in Prince William County for anyone under 18. It is 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight Friday and Saturday, regardless of spring break or holidays.
Area residents said Logmill Road is a dangerous stretch of road in the Bull Run Mountain area. At least seven young people have died in crashes on that road since 2000.
