The much ballyhooed Harbor Station development has a new owner.
California-based commercial and residential developer SunCal recently purchased the partially completed mixed-use project on the banks of the Potomac River.
Originally planned for a hotel, marina, golf course, Virginia Railway Express station and upscale family homes, Harbor Station fell by the wayside after former owner Lee Carolina LLC experienced major financial difficulties.
Since 2009, the development has sat in the hands of a bank-appointed receiver Compass LLC, and the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course has remained unused. According to
Compass LLC attorney Mike Lubeley, discussions began heating up with SunCal in recent weeks and the deed on the property was signed in the last few days.
Prince William County Supervisor Maureen Caddigan of the Potomac District said she was very excited to see the property finally sold, especially the entire parcel.
“Several months ago, they [SunCal] met with [Prince William Board of County Supervisors
Chairman] Corey [Stewart] and I,” Caddigan said. “They flew in, and they loved the property.”
Financial details of the transaction are not being disclosed, according to PR Newswire.
Back in 2006, Harbor Station was zoned for a combination of residential, commercial, hospitality, marina and civic uses. According to the release, the community’s plans are approved for up to 4,000 residential units and 3.7-million square feet of commercial uses.
“We’re very excited to be involved with this special property that is located in a spectacular waterfront setting and is planned to offer a mix of residential, commercial and recreational uses,” stated Casey Tischer, vice president of Land Acquisitions for SunCal, in the release.
“We understand the importance of Harbor Station as a destination community, and we’re looking forward to working with the county and area residents as we develop the site.”
In addition to the Harbor Station transaction, in recent months the company acquired various developments in Chicago, California and Las Vegas.
