Rep. Gerald E. “Gerry” Connolly, D-11th, recently got the U.S. Department of Transportation to give up a $1.3 million grant for signs and historic markers in Prince William County.
The markers and signs are along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway corridor where it passes through Prince William County. They’ll help increase tourism at the better known sites as well as lesser known sites such as Buckland Battlefield in the far western end of the county.
The corridor, which stretches from Gettysburg, Pa., to Monticello, holds more Civil War battlefields than any other area in the country, stated in a news release from Connolly’s office.
Connolly said in the release that the signs and markers would help tourists and students better understand the history of the surrounding area.
“This project will prove to be an asset to Prince William County both in terms of its economic worth to the community and its preservation of the region’s heritage and history,” Connolly said. “I thank Secretary LaHood for recognizing the significance of this project, particularly as Virginia and other states along the historic corridor commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.”
The money for the signs and markers will flow through the Virginia Department of Transportation, the release stated.
