Hundreds of Forest Park High School students plan to leave their cars at home Friday, all in the name of environmentalism.
And they hope other area residents will join them.
The Forest Park students are holding their fourth annual “Get Green Get Heard” event Friday from 6:45 to 7:30 a.m.
During the event, the students will “attempt to get, not only our entire student body, but everyone in our community involved in saving our degrading environment,” stated Forest Park student Teresa Galasso in an email.
“This movement was created to encourage communities everywhere to make alternative lifestyle choices that will help preserve and save the earth,” she said. “Part of our main focus is having students find various ways to get to school which conserve energy and use less resources that are harmful to the earth.”
During the annual event, organized each year by Shannon Geraghty’s AP government class, Forest Park students walk, ride the bus, bicycle, skateboard and even unicycle to school, Galasso said.
The government students spend two weeks each year organizing and promoting the event, making posters and holding rallies to spread awareness about their event and about their cause.
Last year about 40 percent of the school’s student body participated in the event, according to the “Get Green Get Heard” website.
