A man was shot Thursday morning at a homeless camp near the Foulger Square shopping center at in Woodbridge, police said.

The victim was shot by a known acquaintance during an altercation at the camp in a wooded area beside the dead end of Great Oaks Drive, near the Global Food and Kohl’s stores about 11:30 a.m., Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.

The victim was shot in the upper body and was flown by helicopter to a trauma center. He is expected to survive, Perok said.

Perok said the shooting was not random, and police do not have a description of the gunman.

A helicopter was brought in to help police search for a suspect, police said.

Nearby Gar-Field High School was placed on “Secure-the building” lockdown mode following the shooting.

School officials confirmed that the lockdown was lifted shortly before the school’s 2:30 p.m. dismissal.
