Officer William VanAntwerp and his canine partner, Hawkeye, recently participated in the United States Police Canine Association’s Police Dog 1 National Trials, placing fourth in obedience and achieving national PD1 certification.
“I am pleased with the accomplishment by Officer VanAntwerp and Hawkeye,” Prince William County police Chief Charlie T. Deane said. “Their performance at the national trials, and throughout the year, is a fine reflection of the high standards we have for our K-9 Unit.”
The national trials, held Sept. 18 to 23 in Detroit Lakes, Minn., draw the top police K-9 teams from across the U.S. and Canada for a weeklong competition. Eighty-five teams participated, competing in six events: obedience, suspect search, article search, agility, criminal apprehension and criminal apprehension with gunfire.
Each canine team must qualify annually in a sanctioned regional or district certification before being eligible to enter the national field trials, with obedience having a greater weight than any of the other categories. A team must have a total score of 490 in order to qualify for PD1 certification; the team must have a total score 560 or more in order to qualify for the national trials.
