A woman suffered serious burns, and two others were injured trying to rescue her, in a fire on Caledonia Circle on Thursday afternoon.
The fire was reported about 3:45 p.m. in a townhouse community off Hedges Run Drive.
Five people were home when the blaze broke out. Two escaped and called 911. Two others tried to rescue a woman trapped on the third floor, said Prince William County fire and rescue Battalion Chief Joe Robertson said.
All three suffered injuries, he said.
Firefighters rescued the woman trapped and she was flown by helicopter to Washington Hospital Center with serious burns. One of the people who tried to rescue her was also flown out as a precaution. The helicopters landed at Lake Ridge Middle School on Mohican Road.
The third injured person was being evaluated at the scene, Robertson said.
The fire started on the third floor, Robertson said. Firefighters opened the roof to let out smoke and steam, he said. The blaze was contained to the house where it started.
Eight people were displaced by the fire and will be assisted by the Red Cross.
The Fire Marshal's Office and Prince William police are investigating how the blaze began.
The fire was the second major blaze in the area this year.
In May, a four-alarm blaze sparked by carelessly discarded cigarettes left $1.5 million in damage to Dominion Middle Ridge apartments. Families in 28 apartments were displaced.
