Organizers of World Car-Free Day want commuters to ditch their vehicles and walk, bike, tele-commute or ride mass transit on Thursday.

They say more than 9,000 people in the Washington, DC area have already pledged to participate.

According to the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, the area will add 1.2 million people and 3.9 million daily vehicle trips by 2030. That's an average of 25 million more vehicle miles traveled per day.

In Virginia, state officials expanded the idea into an entire week. Commuters who sign the Try Transit Week pledge are entered for a chance to win a free ride for a year on the winner's choice of mass transportation and also two-two round-trip tickets on Amtrak Virginia.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
