Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent Randy Bridges released a statement Friday evening noting that staff at Colonial Forge High School under his direction reviewed the response related to students wearing yellow T-shirts and other activities in support of a student recently disciplined.

Bridges said the conclusion is many of the actions the school took were inappropriate.

"...We are sorry for any embarrassment or inconvenience incurred by the students who were appropriately exercising their freedom of speech and by the families of those students. This administration and the school board fully support the First Amendment rights of our students," Bridges noted.

The student disciplined, 14-year-old Bryan Thompson, donned a banana suit and ran across the school's football field last Friday during halftime. He was suspended for 10 days along with a recommendation of expulsion for the remainder of the year.

After a meeting with the school system Friday, Thompson's mother told InsideNova.com: "He goes back to school Monday."

Bridges' statement did not specifically address Bryan Thompson's suspension or recommended expulsion.
