PHOTOS: Virginia Tech police find exotic animals in steam tunnel

Virginia Tech police say someone has stepped forward to say a menagerie of snakes, bugs, and furry creatures found in an underground steam tunnel belongs to her.

Maj. Kevin Faust said Friday the woman called late Thursday to claim the collection, which is now in the possession of a group that handles exotic animals. He declined to identify the caller or why the animals ended up in the tunnel, citing a police investigation.

Workers on Tech's campus made the unusual discovery earlier Thursday. The animals include snakes, a black widow spider, a cage of crickets, a tarantula, two lizards, a frog, three mice and a rabbit.

Faust declined to say what charges might be filed.

The steam tunnels are off-limits to everyone except Tech workers.
