The Prince William Board of County Supervisors authorized a public hearing regarding the disbanding of the Prince William Park Authority during its meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The hearing date has yet to be scheduled.
Last week, the Park Authority Board voted unanimously to become part of county government answerable to the county executive.
“Staff from the county government and the Park Authority are working together diligently to make recommendations to the Board on the steps necessary to complete the merger and to make sure that there is seamless service to the community,” county spokesman Jason Grant stated in a news release Tuesday.
The Board of County Supervisors established the Park Authority as a separate corporation in 1977, when Prince William had a population of 150,000 and three parks.
The county now has more than 410,000 residents with 67 park properties of 4,000 acres and 289 fields. This year’s Park Authority capital and operating budget was $27.3 million.
