Prince William County hazmat crews responded to a Lake Ridge gas station after large quantities of green liquid were found in a storm drain Wednesday morning.
A survey crew working in the area of Old Bridge and Smoketown roads opened a manhole cover at the Exxon, 3514 Old Bridge Road, around 10 a.m. and discovered the liquid, according to Prince William Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Ernie Little.
The surveyors also saw the liquid on the ground about 50 feet away at the gas station’s entrance on Smoketown Road, Little said.
While authorities have not determined what it is, Little said the liquid does not appear to pose a threat to area residents. Initially responders believed it was antifreeze, but Little said the gas station also uses green-colored liquids in its car wash.
Officials were using absorbent pads to contain it.
The gas station’s Smoketown Road entrance was blocked, and the storm drain was cordoned off as of 11 a.m.
Units from the Occoquan-Lorton-Woodbridge Volunteer Fire Department and the Buckhall Volunteer Fire Department were also on the scene.
Westbound traffic on Old Bridge Road was not affected by the incident.
