Few stories have generated as much reaction on our Facebook page lately as the brewing battle over the Prince William County school budget. As it stands now, the spending plan includes no raises for teachers and other school system employees through 2015. In response, some teachers said they would begin a “work to the rule” protest, meaning they won’t stay at work any longer than their contract requires.
Christen Morin Good for them! I would do the same thing. My kids have had wonderful teachers that have gone out of their way to help them with catching up work or retake a test or whatever needed to be done. They also volunteer their time to help out with the after school activities such as clubs and sports. Teachers should be the first on the list for a raise. I am afraid that we are going to lose all the good teachers we have in PWC....that they will apply for jobs in the surrounding counties. So in the end, our kids are going to suffer. Very sad.
Connie Moser Actually, almost all salaried employees work more than 8 hours a day. My husband works holidays, nights and weekends with no extra pay, even though he is only paid for 40 hours. So does the military.
Karen Peak When I see how much these teachers do during planning periods, staying late at night, coming in weekends to get assessments and such entered, grading... Anyone who things teaching is a walk in the park, become a substitute and see what goes on that far too many have no idea about. No one would pull the hours and deal with the stress they do for the pay they do.
Steven Grant Whatever people - they work 9 months a year and whine and complain constantly about being overworked. Wah - with unemployment over 8% (officially) and bordering on 15% when underemployed/out of workforce people are included, when most private sector workers haven't seen a raise in years - I really don't have a lot of sympathy for anyone with a near guaranteed job. Grow up. Teachers are no more noble in their profession than anyone else. I'm sickened by the threats they trot out if they don't get their way - and if the tax money doesn't flow the way they want it to. Give me a break.
Meredith Mungo Sanders Don't they get paid summers? Paid Christmas and Spring Break vacations? Just wondering if they figured out how much they really make after doing the math.
Sheri Sparry Burns LOL @ people who think we get paid for the summer! We're paid 10 months and that pay is spread out over 12.
Melinda Kenney-Masters Here is a question for everyone to ponder. Would you pay more in your county taxes in order for the teachers to get a raise? What area of PWC budget would you have decreased in order to have them get their raises: Police, Fire and Rescue, help for the needy? Where should we pull the money for this? Their salaries are comparable to other counties in our area. My husband is now on his third year of no COLA, or step increase.
Heather Rose I think teachers deserve pay raises. But, today we should be happy to have a job. So many out there who can't find a job. I’s rather have a job. We are all suffering from no raises and benefit cuts.
Jennifer Batozynski Marsh My husband is a firefighter for PWC and has not gotten a cost of living raise,or any other kind of raise for that matter, since he joined the department almost 5 years ago. I do feel sorry for the teachers but being one myself I chose this profession not based on pay but based on the fact that I love teaching children. I knew this job would not make me a millionaire! Let's not forget about the other public servants who do so much for our community and risk their lives daily. Don't they deserve raises too?
