We’ve collected 266 petitions in opposition to the Purcell Road widening project from citizens in the Coles District and from other Prince William County citizens. It’s been our understanding that this road project was proposed for safety considerations to meet VDOT standards for an urban collector roadway and that it was being funded by VDOT. To the first issue -- safety -- accident reports from the intersections of the Dumfries Rd and Purcell Road, Hoadly Road and Minnieville Road indicate that Purcell Road, as a 2-lane road, is no more dangerous than Hoadly or Minnieville. Between the periods of 1/1/2010-7/29/2011, Purcell Road had 26 accidents while Hoadly and Minnieville both had 27.
The second issue with the project is funding. It is our understanding that the county will have to pay $1.6 million dollars on top of $6.7 million dollars provided by VDOT to do the first 0.6 miles of road widening work. Spending this money on the first phase of this project, the 0.6 realignment and the expansion of the road to four lanes just past Vista Brooke, seems like it might increase safety issues as drivers merge back into one lane at the dangerous curve on the road. There are better uses for the funding for this project.
The community is overwhelmingly opposed to this project and we hope Prince William County Planning Commission, Board of Supervisors and VDOT listens.
