Manassas Park to update city's financial software

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Manassas Park City Council recently voted to spend $298,750 to update the city's financial software.

According to Karen Spence, Manassas Park's budget manager,  one of the benefits to city residents will be the consolidation of all city bills to one login which residents can use to see their personal property and real estate taxes and utility bills.

"I think the residents will be very pleased with that," Spence said. "They'll be able to type in their name and see every single bill. They'll see it with just one login."

Permitting and property ownership, as well as a  history of real estate sales, real estate appeals and assessments, will be kept up-to-date with the new software and residents will also be able to see those with the same login, Spence said.

The current  software, AS400 Bright, doesn't keep histories of appeals, assessments or sales, according to a presentation Spence gave to the council last week.

One benefit to the city will be that the operating system for city hall will be reduced to a single server.

An added benefit when the city buys the software from Tyler Technologies is that the company  will provide annual maintenance, disaster recovery "should it be necessary" and software upgrades, Spence told the council.

To make sure residents don't encounter any problems, Tyler will also provide training to staff to eliminate down time, prevent data loss, accelerate the learning curve and  alleviate additional  work.

The city attorney will have to go through contracts to make sure everything is good to go before the contract is taken back to city council for ratification, Spence said.

After that, it's a matter of scheduling with the departments and Tyler to get things going, Spence said.
