The Virginia American Water Company has requested a 25 rate percent for Prince William County customers using 17,300 gallons per quarter. That means customers that pay an average of $80.01 today would pay $99.87 starting March 7.

Virginia American Water is expected to receive an additional $5.7 million for all of its districts, which include Prince William, Alexandria, Hopewell and Eastern (Va.). Most recently, the company raised its rates last March, totaling an additional $4.3 million from all of its districts.

According to its report filed with the State Corporation Commission earlier this month, “operating expenses have continued to increase and the Company has made significant system investments” since applying for the 2011 increase in 2009.

For the second straight time, Supervisor John D. Jenkins, D-Neabsco is seeking consensus from the Prince William Board of County Supervisors to oppose the rate increase.

Staff writer Kipp Hanley can be reached at 703-530-3904.
