Man injured falling into Manassas well

A 40-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries on Feb. 13 after falling 20 feet into a concrete well, fire officials said Tuesday.

Employees with the Fru-Con Construction Company were preparing to lower a piece of equipment into a confined space at the Upper Occoquan Service Authority’s Winter Branch Pumping Station at 9909 Godwin Drive in Manassas, when the employee fell into the well, Manassas Fire Marshal Francis Teevan said.

The victim’s coworkers helped him out of the well. The man was treated by paramedics for a possible head injury and fractured arm before he was sent to Inova Fairfax Hospital's trauma center, officials said.

A special stretcher was used to lower the man from the top of the well to the ground and into an ambulance, Teevan said.

Teevan said the construction was part of an expansion at the pump station, which will include a new wet well with submersible pumps, a new generator and surge tank, among other equipment.  The USOA, according to Teevan, hopes to complete the project in 2014.
