A Fredericksburg man was sentenced to four months in prison Feb. 22 for having sex with his 17-year-old Yorkshire terrier.
Jason Willis Sanborn, 35, was ordered to serve five years with four years and eight months suspended in Fredericksburg Circuit Court after pleading guilty in December to bestiality.
The dog, named Buddy, was placed into a new home but died just over a week later.
Buddy was also blind and suffered from some health issues, according to the Stafford SPCA, whose employee, Lori O’Pry-Huber, was instrumental in the case.
O’Pry-Huber initially saw an ad that Sanborn placed over the summer on Craigslist seeking “canine play.” Suspicious, she began to interact with Sanborn until she and SPCA head Bill Hoyt took their evidence to the local police.
Sanborn was also convicted in Fredericksburg General District Court of distributing obscene materials when he sent photos to O’Pry-Huber of him and the dog.
According to court records, Sanborn was ordered as part of his sentence not to use the Internet and never to keep an animal companion.
