Virginia Department of Transportation officials said driver should avoid U.S. 29 in Gainesville this weekend.
Construction crews will be shifting traffic onto recently completed detour roads in the area of U.S. 29 and Linton Hall Road on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7 and 8, according to a VDOT press release.
From 7 a.m. Saturday until noon Sunday one of two lanes in each direction on U.S. 29 between Interstate 66 and Virginia Oaks Drive will be closed, VDOT officials said.
Drivers will not be able to make left turns at U.S. 29 and Linton Hall Road, but will be allowed to make u-turns at Heathcote Boulevard and Virginia Oaks Drive, according to the press release.
Prince William County police will be directing traffic at the intersections.
VDOT recommends that motorists heading south use I-66 west to U.S. 15 south and those heading north use U.S. 15 north to I-66 East to avoid U.S. 29 in the area.
The construction is part of VDOT’s project to build two overpasses, one carrying U.S. 29 over the railroad tracks and one carrying Linton Hall Road and Gallerher Road over both U.S. 29 and the railroad tracks.
The entire road project, which also includes widening portions of U.S. 29 to six lanes, is scheduled to be complete in 2015.
