Two Nokesville-area schools were placed on "secure-the-building" mode Friday afternoon after reports of a weapon in the area of Va. 28 in Nokesville, officials said.

Police investigated and found a child in the area -- not on school property -- with an airsoft gun, according to Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

Nokesville Elementary, 12625 Fitzwater Drive, and nearby Brentsville District High School, 12109 Aden Road, were placed on secure-the-building mode as a precaution at about 12:30 p.m. after the reports, according to Prince William County Public Schools spokeswoman Irene Cromer.

Officials lifted the security precaution at the two schools at 1:20 p.m.

Students and staff at both schools were safe and no injuries were reported, according to Cromer.

Perok said the child, whose age was not released, will not face any charges because “no crime was committed.”

Staff writer David Pierce can be reached at 703-530-3905.
