Wilmington ends Potomac's win streak

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Great pitching was essential to the Potomac Nationals’ 10-game win streak.
But Potomac’s pitching was less than great on Thursday. In fact, its win streak is also over after a 5-4 loss to Wilmington on Thursday at Pfitzner Stadium.
This loss also snaps Potomac’s 14-game home win streak.
“It’s never easy to have something that we had going end,” Potomac relief pitcher Adam Carr said. “But we’ve got to come out [today] and try and win a baseball game.”
Potomac starting pitcher Ross Detwiler struggled with his command, walking five in four in-nings.
Reliever Craig Stammen had a good outing going before allowing a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh.
Carr entered in the eighth, then surrendered a single to Jeff Howell and walked Wilver Perez.
Howell advanced to second on Perez’s base on balls, third on a sacrifice bunt and scored the de-cisive run on pinch-hitter Joe Dickerson’s sacrifice fly.
Not to worry, says Nationals manager Randy Knorr. He hopes his pitchers learn from their mis-takes and return with better stuff their next time out.
“We’ll go over the game with them and tell them what we think should have happened,” Knorr said. “These guys have been outstanding and they’re entitled to off nights. They’ll bounce back.”
Players showed no signs of letting this loss get them down. Some were laughing as they sat in the clubhouse eating the postgame meal, knowing they are 10-3 and in first place in the Northern Divi-sion.
“I don’t think it’ll bother them,” Knorr said. “Wilmington just beat us.”
Derrick Robinson’s second inning two-run single gave Wilmington a 2-0 lead.
But Potomac countered with two runs in the third. Brian Peacock scored on Matt Rogelstad’s double and Rogelstad scored on Ofilio Castro’s groundout.
Seth Bynum doubled home Edgardo Baez to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead in the fifth.
The Nationals took a 4-2 advantage as Bynum scored on a groundout by Peacock.
