Yellow Jackets celebrate Cedar Run championship

The ball reached Nelson Ward’s hands in the closing seconds of Saturday’s Cedar Run boys’ dis-trict tournament championship and the Osbourn Park forward quickly dashed ahead to score a layup for the game’s final points.
Just after Osbourn Park’s 55-49 win over Battlefield was official, Ward and teammate Aaron Lee came together in celebration with Ward pulling Lee into his arms to give him a bear hug. Other teammates soon joined them.
The Yellow Jackets (18-8) were free to show exultation. This victory completes their rise to the Cedar Run summit after winning only three games last season.
“This year feels very good,” Yellow Jackets forward Zach Bargeron said. “It shows everyone we’re number one.”
Though Battlefield (10-15) used a zone defense to force Osbourn Park to shoot from the outside, the Yellow Jackets occasionally penetrated. Bargeron led all scorers with 13 points and forwards Marcus Brooks, Ward and Andrew Brookins combined to score 19 points.
“We found a lot of holes,” Bargeron said. “Our guards were looking in the middle and our big men were cutting to the basket and getting open looks.”
Battlefield retaliated from a 26-17 second quarter deficit and tied the score at 48 following a three-pointer by James Robinson with 1:25 left in regulation.
But the Yellow Jackets closed the game on a 7-1 run, preventing the Bobcats from pulling the up-set.
The Bobcats turn their attention to Tuesday and a Northwest Region quarterfinal match with GW-Danville.
“We all went down to GW-Danville [on Friday] night and watched that team in a hostile envi-ronment,” Battlefield coach Al Ford said. “That gave us a little taste of that raucous environment.”
Osbourn Park faces William Fleming on Tuesday.
First, the Yellow Jackets will celebrate Saturday’s win, a reward for their belief in their coach’s schemes and each other.
“It’s a matter of believing in the system and believing in one another,” Yellow Jackets coach Bob Lake said. “They believed.”
