FREDERICK, Md. – Home runs by Chris Vinyard and Brandon Snyder helped the Frederick Keys beat the Potomac Nationals 2-0 on Friday night.
Vinyard hit his home run leading off the bottom of the second inning. Snyder’s blast came with two outs in the bottom of the third.
Brandon Tripp managed Frederick’s only other hit. He hit his 13th double after Vinyard’s home run.
Potomac’s offense fared no better in the hit department, managing only three hits. The Nationals received singles from Michael Martinez, Dee Brown and Brian Finegan. Finegan also stole a base.
The game lasted only two hours, 15 minutes.
The Nationals put together scoring threats in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, with Finegan at second, Boomer Whiting’s sacrifice bunt moved him to third.
But Martinez struck out and Francisco Plasencia struck out for the second and third out, respectively.
An inning later, Brown stood on second with one out. But Trevor Lawhorn and Jhonatan Solano both popped out, leaving Brown stranded.
Keys relief pitcher Brett Bordes retired all three Potomac batters he faced in the eighth and Ryan Rodriguez set down the Nationals in order in the ninth.
Pitchers Hassan Pena and Edulin Abreu made their Potomac debuts in this game after both were called up from Low-A Hagerstown.
Pena started and pitched five innings. He allowed all of Frederick’s runs and hits, walked three and struck out four.
Pena made six starts with the Suns, going 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA. He recorded 24 strikeouts in 26 innings. His final Low-A outing came July 20 when he tossed six shutout innings against Greenville, allowing four hits to get the win. The Washington Nationals chose him in the 13th round of the 2006 draft.
Abreu pitched two innings and struck out five. Abreu was 2-1 for Hagerstown with a 4.03 ERA. He tied for the team lead with six saves and was second with 30 appearances.
Martin Beno tossed the final inning and did not allow a hit, run or walk.
