Jordan commits to Lafayette

When it comes to determining her career path, Samantha Jordan is still up in the air. She thinks right now she wants to either sell her own magazine or go into politics.
But as far as college goes, Jordan has made up her mind. The Stonewall Jackson High School senior has committed to play Division I women’s basketball for Lafayette College (Pa.).
A 5-foot-11 guard/forward, Jordan had 12 Division I offers to choose from, but felt in the end that Lafayette fit her needs both academically and athletically.
Jordan, who currently carries a 4.3 grade point average, will head to a program that saw six of its players from last season’s team be named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the spring semester.
Lafayette had been following Jordan since last summer when the coaching staff saw her play in AAU competitions, Stonewall Jackson head girls basketball coach Nsonji White said.
Jordan also became familiar with the program through a friend of her father’s whose daughter was a freshman on the team.
“I liked the way the coach made me feel,” Jordan said. “I also liked the campus and their facilities plus the location. It’s like its own college town.”
Under head coach Tammy Smith, Lafayette went 14-16 last season, winning its most games in 10 years.
A versatile player, Jordan averaged 11.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 4.2 steals per game last season in helping the Raiders go 25-1.
She was a second-team all-Cedar Run District selection and has been on the varsity since her freshman year.
Coach Smith said there wasn’t an athlete like Samantha in the Patriot League,” White said. “She gets to the basket and is long and lanky.”
Jordan, who cannot sign her national letter of intent until November, is the second member of Stonewall Jackson’s team to choose a Division I college.
Kyani White, a junior guard, has committed to Virginia Tech.
