With the Rutgers' coaching staff looking on, De'Antwan "Rocket" Williams appeared headed for another stellar performance after carrying three times for 60 yards and scoring on an 11-yard run in the Vikings' first series of the game.
But on his fourth carry, Williams gained six yards before spraining his right ankle after being tackled out of bounds by a Freedom defender.
"I was out of bounds when the dude rolled on my ankle," Williams said. "At first, I thought it was broken, but luckily it was just a sprain,
"After the first series, I thought it was there for the taking, but then the ankle was sprained. It was disappointing (not to get more carries), but stuff happens. This game wasn't worth risking the season."
Woodbridge did well enough without the Rocket, beating Freedom, 45-20, to clinch at least a tie for the Cardinal District title at 4-0 and 9-0 overall. The Vikings finish regular season play at Gar-Field next week. Shariff Coleman got Rocket's carries and made the most of them, running for 127 yards and scoring on a 90-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Woodbridge quarterback Frank Buckley.
Williams sat out the rest of the ensuing series. Then after being worked on by trainers and having his ankle wrapped, Williams returned, carrying five more times for just 13 yards. He finished with 84 yards on nine carries, running somewhat gingerly on the ankle. Williams spent the entire second half on the Woodbridge sideline in street clothes.
Williams said he would rehabilitate the ankle this week and be ready to play against Gar-Field next week.
"It's a sprain, but I should be able to play," Williams said. "What we did tonight shows we have a lot of good athletes.
Buckley completed 11 of 18 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
Woodbridge coach Keith King said the game showed his team is more than a one-dimensional unit.
"Everybody looks at Rocket and Rocket is going to get his. He showed that on the first series, but we have lots of other guys that can play and our defense is very good. I was very pleased with how we played."
Freedom (0-4, 2-7) showed some fight, scoring 14 points in the third quarter, including a 78-yard kickoff return by Deon Jones. Raghib Tyler also caught a 35-yard pass from Keith Johnson, who threw for 168 yards.
