Brian Peacock's groundout in the top of the ninth inning scored Jesus Valdez.
That was all the Potomac Nationals needed as they beat the Kinston Indians 1-0 to open the four-game series.
After the Indians made a pitching change, Valdez opened the ninth with a single.
He went to third base when Stephen King reached on a fielding error by Kinston third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall.
After Dan Nelson struck out, Peacock grounded out to second base and Valdez scored.
In the bottom of the ninth, Cole Kimball walked Alex Castillo to load the bases with one out.
But Kimball struck out Adam Davis and John Drennen grounded out to second base to end the game.
Atahualpa Severino (1-0) was the winning pitcher.
Francisco Plasencia and Chris Marrero had two hits for the Nationals (22-14).
