Isaiah Armwood’s first shot of collegiate career came with 24 seconds to go Thursday and gave fifth-ranked Villanova a 69-68 win over George Mason in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tip-off in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Patriots (2-1) led by nine at the half and by as many as four points over the final five minutes of the game.
With under a minute to go, Mason freshman Sherrod Wright missed the second of two free throws — he made the first — and Dominic Cheek rebounded the ball and senior guard Scottie Reynolds found Armwood for a 3-pointer on the other end of the court to give the Wildcats (3-0) final lead of the game.
Sophomore Ryan Pearson led the Patriots with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds while former Freedom High School star Cam Long, a junior, scored 13 and added two rebounds. Long was perfect from the foul line, going 6-for-6.Patriots sophomore guard Andre Cornelius scored 13.
Reynolds, who was recruited by Mason head coach Jim Larranaga out of nearby Herndon High School, led all scorers with 18 points on 6 of 12 shooting. He also made 2 of 7 3-point attempts. Corey Fisher added 17 for the Wildcats.
