Even if the University of Maryland men’s basketball team doesn’t get there themselves, Eric Hayes (Potomac High School) is still going to participate in the Final Four festivities.
The senior guard for the Terrapins has been invited to compete in the 3-point shootout during the Final Four weekend of April 3-5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
He will be the second Potomac graduate to compete in an individual skills session at the Final Four. Rolan Roberts participated in the slam-dunk competition in 2002.
One of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top 3-point shooters, Hayes has converted a team-high 45.2 percent of his attempts this season for Maryland (57 of 126).
He entered Saturday’s game at the University of Virginia fourth on Maryland’s career list with 188 3-pointers.
This season, he has converted at least one trey in 26 of the Terrapins 30 games.
A four-year player for Maryland, Hayes has started every game this season. He is third on the team in scoring, averaging 11 points per game and leads Maryland in free-throw shooting percentage (86.3).
In the ACC, he is 10th in assists (3.9 per game) and second in assist/turnover ratio (2.4).
Maryland enters this week’s ACC Tournament with the No. 2 seed and on a seven-game winning streak. The Terrapins (23-7, 13-3) tied Duke for the regular-season title.
