Potomac's Burrell
in Capital Classic
Potomac High School senior basketball player Justin Burrell has been selected to participate in the prelimi-nary game of the Capital Classic April 15th at American University.
A guard who has signed with Mount St. Mary's, Burrell will compete with the Suburban team against a team from the District. Burrell helped lead the Panthers to a 17-3 record and was named all-Northwest Region and the Cardinal District Player of the Year this season.
Potomac's Matta
named pitcher of week
Mike Matta (Potomac) was named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week.
A senior right-hander at Mount St. Mary's, Matta earned two saves in is two relief appearances last week against Norfolk State. He also started one game.
Overall, he struck out five and walked just one in 8.1 innings and recorded a 1.08 ERA in his three appear-ances.
Local players in Roundball Classic
Kyani White (Stonewall Jackson), Kelly Hamner (Osbourn Park) and Rachel Gordon (Osbourn Park) will compete in the Girls Mid-Atlantic Premier All-Star Game March 20 at Hagerstown (Md.) Community College as part of the Buffalo Wild Wings Roundball Classic.
All three are members of the American All-Stars Team that will take on the National All-Stars at 5 p.m.
White was the Cedar Run and Northwest Region Player of the Year, while Gordon and Hamner were all-Cardinal District selections and first and second-team all-region selections.
Darren Warren (Stonewall Jackson) is a member of the American All-Stars for the Boys Elite All-Star game at 6:30 p.m. on March 20 at Hagerstown Community College.
Warren was the co-Cedar Run District Player of the Year and a second-team all-Northwest Region selec-tion.
Longwood's Smith among finalists
Longwood University's Dana Smith (Hylton) is one of nine finalists for the V Foundation Come-back Award. The winner will be announced March 30 during ESPN's basketball coverage.
Smith, who was a finalist for this award a year ago, overcame three knee injuries in four years. He averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds a game this year,
Stonewall Jackson blanks Freedom
Stonewall Jackson's boys tennis team defeated Freedom Tuesday, 9-0. Jimmy Davis won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 followed by Houston Ward at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1), Scott Collins at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), Joseph Majillo at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1), Eric Bond at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4) and Diego Aliaga at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, Davis and Ward won 10-0, Collins and Majillo won 10-2 and Bond and Aliaga won 10-1.
